Greetings and Salutations,
I felt inspired today...so why wait a month for another
newsletter...I have something to talk about now!
Well I can't remember the last time I used the newsletter to
discuss television but this is serious. Tomorrow, February 27th, marks
the return of TV's number one show...Scandal.

After 10 weeks of waiting, finally questions will be
answered like
- How will Sally killing her husband play out?
- How will Huck react to Quinn's defection to Charlie?
- Will the President and Jake's plan backfire as Jake is the new head of B-613?
- What is Momma Pope gonna do?
I personally have some thoughts but I typically save it for
Twitter and Facebook during the show. I leave reviews and other notions
of the show to professionals like
As I discussed with some of you last week on Facebook, I'm
seriously contemplating retiring the Damn Newsletter at the end of this year.
Just some thoughts I've had lately. It will be 10 years in December
and hey if that was enough for the show, Friends, then it may
be good enough for me. I'm just considering it at this point but I'm
torn. We will see what the year brings us. But for those
wondering...yes even if I end the Damn Newsletter, I will do one last Damn
Awards. That seem to be a topic that most felt strongly about.
Shout out time!!! The Damn Newsletter Shout Out goes out to
Lara Temple. Lara gets the shout out not only for volunteering her home
to me when I eventually visit Florida again...thanks Lara...but she also gave
me a talking to I needed and some sound advice. Long story short...she
had to remind me that I'm a good guy. Okay, it had a lot more passion
behind it trust me. It something I need to be reminded from time to time
so thanks Lara. Now if only she could follow the advice I give her..Ha!
Have you ever heard the sentence "You have potential"? Sure who hasn't, right? Most people would find that phrase to mean something positive. Most people feel it would mean you are on the cusp of greatness. But there are people like myself that completely hate the phrase. I cringe every time I hear it. It rings in my head like "I love you like a brother" (what I hear from a woman I am interested in) or "She has a great personality" (what people says about a person when you ask what do they look like) with or even "I love you too much to ever have sex with you". (I think that one speaks for itself) As a side note, I've heard all of those sentences too much in my life time...bet you can guess which one I hate the worst.
Why do I hate the phrase? Well all of my life I've aspired
to be great. I've had goals of being the best (best in what? I don't know but
when I figure it out...I want to be the best!) at what I do. Potential by
its very definition…
Latent qualities or abilities that may be developed and
lead to future success or usefulness
It is a slap in the face to what you are in the present. It
says presently you are not that good but in the future you may be something.
It picks at you and tells you that right now...you are a lump of coal but
with enough pressure, a few thousand years, and the right environment you may
become a diamond...possibly. It is a constant reminder why you are not
prepared for the greatness you seek...right now.
The very thought of potential reminds me of a prison. You can't go where
you want to go (greatness) and you don't want to stay where you are.
(mediocrity) I know what you're thinking...I'm going off the deep
in...stretching it just a tad bit...possibly over thinking what one should
consider a complement. Maybe but what's the definition of prison again,
oh yeah it's
A facility in which individuals are forcibly
confined and denied a variety of freedoms under the authority of the state as a
form of punishment
Hmm…well I am forced to be confined to mediocrity; I am denied the freedom of
being great; and I am under the authority of yours or others opinions of what
is “great”. I would call that a punishment. Wouldn't you? Now
how do I break out of this joint?
Here the 3 most obvious ways you can do to break out of “potential prison”
- Focus on now and not the future – No need to worry if you will realize your potential if you just think about making a better you TODAY.
- Don’t look for “greatness” – American education reformist, Horace Mann once said, “Seek not greatness, but seek truth and you will find both”. Look to being true to yourself not comparing yourself to others or for that matter having other people compare you to others. If you are doing what is making you happy, greatness will come.
- For God sake’s stay out of your head!!! – As a classic over thinker, this is something I have to stop doing…IMMEDIATELY. Your own self-doubt will literally destroy you. It will affect your work, discourage you from accomplishing your dreams, and it will affect a relationship…trust me it will.
But those are just my thoughts…right or wrong…just what I am
feeling at the time!!!
